James William Buffett. I bet your thinking who? Well, let me give you a little hint, Margaritaville and Cheese Burger in Paradise. Now do you know who I’m talking about? Were you thinking about Jimmy Buffett? If you were, you were right! Yes, he has some crazy song titles, but he’s awesome! How does someone who sings about Cheeseburgers become so popular? He grew up in Mobile, Alabama
In grade school years, he played the trombone in the school band. He graduated from McGill Institute for boys in 1964. He began playing guitar during his freshman year at Auburn University before continuing college years at Pearl River Community College and the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi where he received a bachelors degree in history in 1969.
Right after graduation he decided to get married. (Like most people do). Jimmy married Margie Washichek in 1969 and divorced in 1972. He only stayed married 3 years. I guess he could sing about cheeseburgers, but couldn’t grill one. Jimmy later married Jane slagsvol. He must like women with strange last names. I guess he would never marry a Lewis. With Jane he had two daughters, Savannah Jane and Sarah Delaney, and later adopted a son, Cameron Marley and lived in Palm Beach, Florida
Yes, he sings about cheeseburgers and 5 o’clock, but that’s not all he does. Jimmy buffet is an American singer, songwriter, author, and businessman. Wow he has a lot on his agenda! Jimmy began his music career in Nashville, Tennessee during the late 1960’s as a country artist and recorded his first folk rock album, Down to
Earth in 1970. Only a few hundred albums were sold. So guess what? It was a flop!
After that Jimmy could be found busking for tourist in New Orleans. Now your probably thinking what’s busking? I had to look it up too. It means he preformed on the street and people gave him money if they liked the performance. So there you go…your vocabulary word for the day. He did that for a while then country music singer Jerry Jeff Walker took him to Key West on a buskin expedition in November of 1971. There was the new vocabulary word. Did you hear it? Busking…don’t forget it.
Jimmy then moved to Key West and began establishing the easygoing beach bum way of life which is what he is known for. It was his beach bum life that helped make him famous. He decided to write about stories his father and grandfather had told him, combined with tropical island themes, and put his words to a country-folk-pop music mix. He then started a band call the “Coral Reefers” and this started Margaretville, Cheeseburger in Paradise, and its 5 o’clock Somewhere, and many more. Jimmy has been on many tours and attended many concerts. At his concerts his fans are called parrot heads and he has a lot of them. So what is a “Parrot Head?”
Let me give you a visual….someone in there mid 50’s, wearing a hat with a giant fake parrot and fake feathers glued to it, sunglasses on, a Hawaiian lau around his neck, a bright orange shirt with tacky flowers on it, and of course, we can’t forget the grass skirt! That’s a parrot head. He has some crazy fans who know how to have a good time. He has had these parrots following him for years and there is no end in sight. Next to his music Jimmy is one heck of a businessman. He owns two major food chains. They are Margaritaville and Cheeseburger in Paradise. Both are tropical theme and both are very popular restaurant food chains.
Tourist love these places to eat. I can say that, because I have eaten at Margaritaville and it’s so much fun and the food is great! Jimmy is also a popular author he has wrote 3 number 1 best sellers, Tales from Margartaville, Where is Joe Merchant, and a Pirate Looks at Fifty. At the age of 67, Jimmy is worth over $400 million dollars. Not bad huh? Jimmy once said that he was inspired by people who keeps rolling, no matter their age. I guess he was right. As a fifth grade student, I have grandparents that are close to Jimmy Buffet’s age and I can’t imagine my grandparents on stage with a bunch of parrotheads at their feet singing about Cheeseburgers!
I think he’s a pretty cool guy! I know that one day I hope to be a parrothead at a concert singing…..Cheeseburger in paradise…Heaven on Earth with an onion slice…Not too particular , not too precise…I’m just a cheeseburger in paradise.
